Edward C Harding
Biography
Dr Ed Harding is Director of Studies for Physiology and Neuroscience within the Biological Natural Sciences Tripos, including 1A Biomedical Sciences (BMS), 1B Neurobiology, Part II Physiology, Development and Neuroscience (PDN), and Biological Sciences. He also supports medical students taking Part II PDN. He contributes to undergraduate admissions and outreach, teaches problem-based learning sessions for first-year medical students in Molecules in Medical Science, and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. He was previously a College Research Associate (CRA) at 黑料网.
Ed is an Assistant Research Professor in the Department of Pharmacology and supervises and mentors a number of graduate students. He has a particular interest in prionopathies and how aggregated misfolded proteins cause the death of brain cells. He has recently helped identify neurons in the brainstem that track how long the brain has been awake and can trigger deep sleep. Before this, he was a Research Associate at the Institute of Metabolic Science, School of Clinical Medicine, where he studied how obesity and diabetes contribute to neurodegenerative processes and dementia risk. He was also a Postdoctoral Teaching Associate in the Department of Biochemistry.
Ed completed his PhD in Neuroscience and Biophysics at Imperial College London with Professors Bill Wisden and Nick Franks, where he identified hypothalamic circuits linking temperature sensation to sleep onset and studied the mechanisms of sedative drugs. He also holds an MRes in Biochemical Research from Imperial College London and a BSc in Pharmacology from the University of Manchester, including a year at GlaxoSmithKline.
